Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the importance of family support experience on vocational rehabilitation for person with mental disability, and through the basis of this, present a theoretical frame for roles of family support.

Methods: This study was analysed through the use of the phenomenological method of Giorgi. The period of source collection was from May 16, 2005 to September 30, 2005 by in-depth interviews and observation. The final participants were 7 persons with mental disability that kept a job more than 6 months via vocational rehabilitation training.

Results: Nine themes of family support which participants experienced were indicated. The desire to "pass over the wall of prejudice and go out into the world", "set and close parted piece", " find possibility that may escape headstall", "get into part of my existence", "have feeling of strength by family existence itself", "have feeling of pressure in over expectation", "fear of life by oneself by family¡¯s binding", "obtain power to advance one more step", and "realize that finally the master of my life is me".

Conclusions: Through these findings, one can know how important family support is in vocational rehabilitation for persons with mental disability.
